I do like the fact that, as a scientist, I am participating in a bigger process that could, in my case, eventually help to treat cancer or spot cancer earlier. However, I also like the fact that, as a scientist, I get to learn new things all the time. What can I say, I love to learn!

Hmmm I’d love to invent something! But my work is not really focusing on inventing anything new. I think that many new and important discoveries happen not because we are trying to discover something new but because we are trying to learn more and understand better. Improving our understanding can suddenly make things obvious that seemed irrelevant to the problem or question we were asking to begin with. And like Isabel said, by doing research we are participating in a process that is bigger and more important than the topic we are studying! Science progresses slowly with the small contributions that many many people make.
