There are many ways in which people can live which will decrease the change of getting certain types of cancer.

For a start, no smoking! Scientists have known since the 50s that there is a link between lung cancer and smoking, and it shocked them so much that many of them, who were smokers, stopped smoking straight away. Smoking can also increase the changes of getting other types of cancer, such as cancer of the mouth, windpipe and food pipe, digestive system and bladder, to name a few.

Another well known link is between excessive sun exposure and skin cancer. People should avoid being out in the sun in the brightest parts of the day, in the summer particularly. People should wear a hat, cover their skin and, very importantly, wear sunscreen and apply it sensibly.

There are also some links between a poor diet and lack of exercise and certain types of cancer, as well as between excessive drinking and some other types of cancer. So a good healthy diet and plenty of exercise are good ways of keeping yourself healthy, not just for preventing cancer but also other diseases.

All of the answers that Isabel gave are very important points. They are some of the most common causes of cancer, and the most important to avoid.

There are also some studies that link some cancers to environmental toxins as well, these can include pesiticides and chemicals used to make plastics, as well as radioactive materials and pollutants such as car fumes.

We are working hard to find ways to cure cancer, a very important task, but as you say, it would be good if we could stop it happening in the first place!
