Scientists believe that the universe began with a big bang.

In the beginning all the matter that makes up the universe was compressed into a single point. This then exploded in a bang, causing everything to expand outwards and the stars and planets to form over many billions of years.

Scientists have some evidence to support this idea and all of our physics is based upon this assumption.
