I never really planned on becoming a scientist, I was just interested in people and how we think, and how I can help people. I ended up as a scientist just by following those interests!

I think being interested in something is all you need. I guess with the same interests I could have become a medical doctor, or a fitness coach, but I liked learning in university so I stuck with that!

If you want to get into science, find something you are interested in, and see where it takes you 🙂

The first thing I ever wanted to be was an archaeologist and then a historian. My dad studied history at Uni and I was always reading his books.
For a little while after that I dabbled about studying art history.
Then the science bug bit me and nearly 20 years later I am a scientists through and through!
However I always knew I wanted to work at a University, being an academic.

I wanted to become a psychologist when I was about 10, I really like talking with people and trying to understand and help them. When I was 13 I started to really like mathematics and patterns in nature like the ones we see in butterflies and tigers and zebras which is what inspired me to study mathematics in the first place!

I always liked history and drama at school so I dabbled with the idea of becoming either a historian or a film star when I was younger. Unfortunately I’m not a very fast writer so I never liked written history exams and at the time of my big break Warner Brothers decided to give Daniel Radcliffe the role of Harry Potter. Shame really, but I like to write in my spare time so maybe if all my experiments fail I’ll start pestering various TV and film companies with some drafts.

It’s interesting to see the other guys here all have such varied backgrounds and where they could have ended up but it seems that we all just stuck with what we enjoyed doing in life, so that’s nice!
