Bio fuels are fuels made from biological things that we can grow, harvest and then replenish in a relatively short space of time so that they are renewable. Many cars in Brazil run on ethanol, which is produced by fermenting sugar cane. This is much better than using petrol gained from crude oil because every year the crops can be grown again, whereas crude oil requires millions of years (and millions of dead creatures) to form.

Bio fuels claim to be “carbon neutral” too, since plants take in the same amount of carbon dioxide from the air when they grow as they give out once they are burnt as fuel. However, increasing production of bio fuels would require more areas of land to be converted into farms and therefore natural habitats of millions of animals could be destroyed. Additionally there actually isn’t enough space on the planet to grow the crops required to run all the cars in the entire world on bio fuels. Therefore a balance of renewable energy sources will need to be found in the future.
