      Yes.

      You need to have a hypotheses so that you can think about what you hope the experiment will tell you and what the restraints or limitations of that experiment may be.

      You also need a plan to make sure you perform the experiment in a sensible and logical way. This makes sure you can test what you want to and helps reduce any chance of making a mistake.

      Depending on the experiment, and how often you have done it before this plan can be quite a simple procedure or a long and quite complicated plan.
